As a member of the National Honor Society and from my involvement in a Civic Duty and Community Awareness course, I have been presented with several opportunities to volunteer. Throughout my senior year I got the privilege of visiting an elder at a near by hospital. I met with her every Friday to chat and visit for an hour. Meeting with her was one of my favorite parts of the week. I enjoyed getting to learn all about her experiences and her loving family. On Tuesdays I would go to the Methodist Church to help log their attendance. Although our main task was to put the attendance sheets on the computer, we also helped out by sorting cards that the church sends out for special occasions. Through NHS I got the chance to help garden and clean up trash around town. Some of the bigger events that NHS would help with are The Ice Man Cometh and Winterfest. When these events come to Kalkaska, our school would help organize the racers or help run the small market.
Civic Duty and Community Awareness allowed me to branch out and meet new people while helping more than just my school. This class provided me countless opportunities to meet more people in my community and volunteer my time. I'm glad I got the chance to take this class because I believe it's important for people to realize the benefits of helping other people. It builds great character and helps to teach people responsibility.
In 2015 the National Honor Society helped with the Cow Pie Classics. We were left in charge of selling some of Shelters products such as ice cream and chocolate milk. Along with this big event we have also helped with several blood drives, babysitting, tutoring, and others activities.
